About this deal

The group - originally from Lozells, Aston, Nechells, Newtown and Erdington areas - have been rivals of the Burger Bar Boys for 25 years. It is thought they took their name in the mid 1990s after their regular meeting spots at the Johnson's café on Heathfield Road in Lozells.

Their rivalry culminated in the shooting dead of innocent friends Letisha Shakespeare, 17 and 18-year-old Charlene Ellis during crossfire at a New Years Day party in 2003. Former best friends became deadly enemies overnight as members took sides according to where they lived and began to carve up parts of the city as their own drug selling turf. These boys live on the adrenaline rush. When they fire that gun and hear the shots go off they think they're unbeatable. They think they're in a film and that it's not for real. They just don't give a f***." A police source said: “The Johnson Crew became increasingly chaotic in their offending in the late 90s. Gang-related shootings from the year 2000 took on the face of organised assassinations in relation to conflicts around drugs.

Both gangs took their names in the mid 1990s after their regular meeting spots, the Burger Bar on Soho Road and Johnson's café on Heathfield Road in Lozells. By the year 2003, these shootings had evolved into issues best summed up as surrounding respect, revenge and revenue." They were formed in the 1980s and later became bitter rivals. Their feud culminated in the tragic deaths of two innocent teenage girl bystanders 20 years ago. In the early days, and despite the split, the gangs still had one common enemy – so-called Yardies. Marcus Ellis, Nathan Martin, Michael Gregory and Rodrigo Simms were alleged to be members of the Burger Bar Boys gang, who intended to gun down members of the Johnson Crew. But pals Charlene Ellis, 18, and Letisha Shakespeare, 17, were tragically killed in the machine gun shooting outside a New Year party, in Aston, on January 2, 2003. Over the course of time, due to conflict, tension and fear, those involved in the two groups moved to areas where they felt more secure due to disputes and the early spate of tit-for-tat shootings.” Johnston Crew

The ex-gangster, known previously on the streets as "Scorcher", said: "You have to remember the people pulling the trigger aren't no expert marksmen. They are young boys who can squeeze a trigger and who spend more time shining their weapons than trying to get skilful with it.In that time a team of eight prosecutors and legal staff have tried 110 defendants across different crime types of serious gang-related violence - securing 92 convictions. But that success story has not eradicated the issue with violence continuing to dog our communities. The Burger Bar Boys are a gang from the Handsworth and Winson Green areas. It is thought their name originated from the Burger Bar on Soho Road they used to meet in. They saw how these Yardies were making money and using brutal means to do it and the local boys wanted a piece of it. At the heart of the Burgers' operation was Raleigh Close in Handsworth, a maze of alleys and connecting ring-roads offering multiple escape routes from their rivals and the West Midlands police. As the millennium came and went, tit-for-tat murders increased, putting a strain on the area's City Hospital, which constantly dealt with new types of trauma injuries and tried to keep the body count down. Crucially, it was the murders during this period that revealed the power of the rival gang leaders. Not only were they capable of cold-blooded murder, often in broad daylight, but they could be seen by multiple witnesses, and still, the public was too terrified to step forward and secure a conviction. As their rivalry escalated into all-out war, the gangs intensified their recruitment efforts, targeting neighbourhood schools to bolster their growing number of foot soldiers and street dealers. For the Burgers and the Johnnies, what would happen next would have global repercussions... Most recently it comes after a fight broke out at Levana bar in the Arcadian in August 2021 following a chance meeting by members of Burger Bar Boys off-shoot Armed Response and Johnson Crew counterpart Goon Squad Army.
