Turbo mode started at around 1830 lumens and dropped to roughly 1500 lumens in 2 minutes, and at 10 minutes it was at around 680lumens. At around 20 minutes it settled at roughly 620-630 lumens and ran till it dropped again at the 2 hours and 5 minutes mark, to roughly 40 lumens. This is not the end of the battery life, because it continued at this output, till after 4hours-14minutes it dropped to 1 lumen. It still didn’t turn off, and continued for several hours, although I stopped the test before it turned off. It never really turned off, even after letting it run for several hours. When the light drops to the 1 lumen level, the battery is around 3V. (Specs: 30 min) Measurements were taken indoors at 5 meters with a professional Hagner E4-X Lux Meter. Measurements were taken 30 seconds after turn on. Ultra Low was too low to measure at 5 meters. These are measured candelas. Alternatively, when charging the battery, 1/2 Press the switch and the BLUE light indicator will blink out the current battery voltage as well. The Nitecore HC65 V2 is a rechargeable LED head torch offering triple light sources that include a main white LED output as well as an auxiliary white light and a red light output. Mode spacing appears to be progressively brighter to the eye and the modes are well spaced enough to be able to know which mode one is currently in. With that in mind, TLR tend to view mode spacing as battery life indicators (amount of runtime left) rather than the specific output (lumens). For Amp readings, I use a Fluke 77III DM, and the readings are taken at turn on. For higher amps, I now use a Fluke 325 True RMS clamp meter. For microamps, I use a cheap DMM with an easy-to-use micro amp setting.

Build

Nitecore has a serious lineup of headlamps, including some L-shape (or right-angle) lamps. But today we’re reviewing the HC65 v2, which is the second version of the HC65. The original HC65 used a CREE XM-L2 LED with a total of 1000 lumens and 3,000 cd. And the HC65 v2 was upgraded to a Luminus SST40 LED with a max output of 1750 lumens and 7,000 cd. That’s definitely an upgrade. A built-in battery voltage indicator under the button will display battery voltage each time the battery is installed and the end cap is tightened. For example if the voltage is 4.2 V, it will flash four times then pause and then flash two more times. The integrated advance temperature regulation (ATR) technology regulates the output of the HC65 V2 according to the working condition and ambient environment to maintain the optimal performance. All output numbers are relative to my homemade Integrating Sphere. It is set up with an Extech SDL400 Lux Meter for measurements including a Kenko PRO1D ND-16 filter. The base measurement is done with a Convoy S2+ that has been tested at 255 lumens.

This headtorch has a maximum output of 1750 lumens from the Luminus SST-40-W LED and is powered by 1 x 18650 8A li-ion battery (included). The battery is rechargeable via a USB-C port at the side of the light and takes approximately 2 hours 25 minutes to fully charge. The HC65 V2 features three light sources including the primary white light, an auxiliary red light and a high CRI auxiliary white light. The red light can effectively protect night vision and is ideal for watching wildlife, stargazing, emergency use and night photography. The warm CRI>90 white light is suitable for short range illumination and resembles the warmth of sunlight, giving a sharp visual whilst reducing eye strain.To the right of the main light there is a red auxiliary LED that offers a constant red output with high/low setting and a red flashing setting. Red light preserves your night vision and is good for wildlife observation, astronomy and night photography. My measurements were pretty close to specs, and even above specs in most modes. Keep in mind that I measured them with an ND filter installed. Therefore, the difference between turn on and 30 seconds in Ultra-Low low seems big, but that’s actually just the lowest lux numbers the luxmeter can measure with that camera ND filter installed. So it’s like 1lux vs 2lux.. USB Type-C. With a suitable rechargeable battery inserted, it can be charged inside the torch via the upgraded USB-C charging port. Reveal the port by unscrewing the USB cover on the right side of the torch and then simply plug the included cable into the charging port and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The indicator beneath the button will slowly flash while charging is in progress, and turn solid once charging is complete after approximately 2.5 hours when charging a 3500 mAh battery with a 2 A / 5 V power source. Usefully, the battery supplied by Nitecore can be charged while in the head torch via a built-in Intelligent Micro-USB. To do this you just need to unscrew the cap (being careful not to lose it) and plug in the cable.
