Strong shows us Salinger the would-be ladies’ man and witnesses two of his three marriages, but doesn’t get salacious about his oft-discussed affinity for much younger women. The closest he gets is, after the author’s move away from Manhattan to distraction-free Cornish, New Hampshire, a pretty high-school girl charms him into breaking his no-interview rule. She betrays him by placing the story not in her high-school paper, as promised, but in a real newspaper; as the film would have it, this is what triggers Salinger’s real reclusiveness. Salinger is played by Nicholas Hoult, one of my favorite young-ish actors who can’t quite reach ****. He’s a fine actor, and has lots of screen charm but hasn't found his real breakthrough yet. At least in my opinion. Dramatizing the creative process, particularly that of a writer, is never easy to do on film. Strong’s concept, as much as I could understand it, is that Salinger’s youthful attitude ended up mirroring the startling rebelliousness of his most famous character, Holden Caulfield. That’s as close as Strong gets to showing how Salinger drew inspiration from the world around him, though there’s very little mention of any of his other works, particularly his short stories about the Glass family, beyond their titles. The second half of the movie is interesting inasmuch as watching any real-life genius go bananas is interesting. But the extreme compression of time (plus the fact that none of the actors age) eventually becomes laughable. Usually he’s used as window dressing in trivial roles, even in serious movies.
