We’ve written many times before about the ‘Boxing Day test’– the reality that a family game will only succeed if absolutely everybody is enthusiastic when it emerges from the cupboard at the big get-together.

Long out of print, this legendary strategy game based on Frank Herbert’s dark sci-fi universe got re-released ealier this year to tie in with the upcoming Dune film. Set on grey Amity Island, the game follows two phases. In the first, the shark chomps down on fleshy swimmers. Meanwhile, the other players attempt to trace the beast - and avoid becoming buffet. Mute Button card - stops a specific player in the other team answering any questions during a turn. Normally this will be played on someone who is an expert at the topic on the card. The QM takes the first card from the "question side" end of the box. He shows the Picture or reads the THEME to the player on his left then asks him the first (ORANGE) question. The role of QM then moves to the player on the QM's left who takes a new card to ask to the player on their left. ANSWERING INCORRECTLY The best new game of 2022, Ark Nova does a lot of things we’ve seen before, but does them well, and manages to make a two-hour game feel faster and less ponderous than many games of that time commitment. The game borrows familiar mechanics from Terraforming Mars, Bärenpark, Great Western Trail, Rajas of the Ganges, and other popular games while still managing to give you the sense that you’re playing something new. Players try to build out their personal zoos, placing enclosure tiles in various shapes and gaining bonuses based on what they cover, and then acquiring animals to fill those spaces for further points. There’s an action-selection mechanism that makes an action less powerful the more you use it, and which also makes single-minded strategies more difficult to pull off. The game doesn’t offer much interaction, which is the main criticism of the fantastic game Wingspan, but other than that, Ark Nova is about as good as a heavy tabletop game can get.Sharky death boy can win by capturing players or munching down further on the boat. On the other hand, players need to wipe him out for victory. We're becoming used to having a gazillion different channels available. Some households might have two, three or more TVs. Some people have Netflix; others have Prime; for many people, channels that aren't on Freeview aren’t an option. And lots of younger people don’t watch much telly at all.
