About this deal

Is it just me that found this post rather rude and unneccesary?? Midges ARE a problem in Scotland - some places worse than others and the question was a reasonable one! This forum is supposed to be for everyone to help each other! I was always fascinated by natural history. When I was around four, I disappeared and everyone was out looking for me. I was found sitting among some cabbages watching a caterpillar. An aunt hugely encouraged me and left me a small legacy with which I bought my first microscope. I'm still using it more some 50 years later. My career has been immensely varied - I've worked in medical entomology in Belize and Cameroon. Since my move to Cambridge, I’m occasionally asked to report on specimens from forensic cases - including some involving infamous crimes – as well as pest problems and medical cases. I’ve authored, and contributed to, several books and written hundreds of papers. I’m never bored. There are over 4,000 species globally with 600 defined alone in North America. Most of them will feed on non-human animals. What midges feed on humans? Biting midges will bite you just like mosquitoes.

There are many dedicated midge repellent options on the market; here are a few of the best ones for your consideration. Smidge Lowland areas with consistent wind and away from water are your best chances for midge free areas in Scotland. Coastal areas (West Coast beaches, we're looking at you) can often be midge free. Scotland's great outdoors is vast and expansive, so you should be able to find somewhere in the summer that's less likely to be a midge fest. WORST PLACES FOR MIDGES IN SCOTLAND? They’ll then eat and feed and extend their burrows as they grow. Typically, they’ll eat various organic matter floating around in the water and mud. Larvae Midges do their hunting all day long, but usually ramp up feeding in the hour or so after sunrise and around sunset. Our immune systems all react differently to midge bites so some people may experience swelling and itching from the biting whilst others might barely notice. DO MIDGES LIKE SOME PEOPLE MORE THAN OTHERS?Midges have sharp mandibles that allow them to pierce through the hides of mammals – most commonly cattle, sheep, deer and, of course, humans. A level three, and midges can be bad enough that it is a good idea to take measures to ‘make yourself repellent’ or cover-up, at a level four ‘That’s not mist, that’s midges!’ and at level five – midges are pretty much as bad as they get. If you’ve not experienced it – you don’t want to know! Apply the solution directly to your bite and clean it up. This will help prevent infection and kill all the bacteria around the wound also. Apply aloe vera

Midges have played a role in the history of Scotland throughout its long and fascinating past – as much – if not more – a part of the country as unicorns, thistles, tartan and haggis.

Dusk and dawn are the most active times for the Highland Midge in midge season. They feed according to light intensity and prefer low-light conditions. Days with lots of cloud cover can, therefore, be some of the worst weather conditions for getting overrun by midges. WHAT ARE THE WORST WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR SCOTTISH MIDGES? Midges tend to stay near the ground in low winds and where there's lots of brush. If you're climbing hills and mountains over 700m, it's unlikely you'll encounter them. Plus, we promise that the views are worth the hike almost anywhere in the Scottish Highlands. Seriously.

Wet, boggy, sheltered highland areas are the worst possible places for midges in Scotland. Glen Coe, the surroundings of Fort William, Great Glen and Torridon can be very bad. WHEN ARE THE MIDGE FREE MONTHS IN SCOTLAND?

Tootsie Roll

With an abdomen full of blood (from biting humans or animals), a single female midge can produce up to 200 eggs. In optimal conditions, with the right type of soil, around half a million midges can hatch from just one two square metre patch of ground. 25% of Scotland’s land area is perfect midge territory and there can be as many as 180,750 trillion midges in Scotland during the peak of the midge season. Culicoides Impunctatus October, November, December, January, February, and March (early autumn and early spring) are usually midge free months in Scotland because the weather is too cold for them...but it may be chilly for you too! HOW TO DEAL WITH THE SCOTTISH MIDGE? The two types of midges are vastly different and you should find out which one you’re dealing with. Non-biting Midges are attracted to lights, so either dimming or not turning on lights that you don’t need will help midges go find another target.
