About this deal

Summer is arriving any day now and the increase in light and rising temperatures helps plants to have a burst of growth. Although this means that plants are growing, it also means that weeds will be shooting up out of the ground. For this reason it is important to keep an eye out for them and gain control where you can. Continue reading our guide below to find out the different gardening jobs that you should be completing during this month. General Tasks For June

Use our Starter fertiliser. Then start feeding as a mature lawn after about 3-4 months according to one of the three programmes outlined in the Fertiliser Buying Guide. When to apply I would cover the perimeter first and then fill in the middle, this will mean there will be a little overlapping but not too much – if done unevenly the fertiliser could burn the grass. If you feel this rate has not been enough then feel free to adjust the amount you use and you can even supplement the feeding with a liquid fertiliser. Just be cautious, overfed grass can turn a brown/grey colour (fertiliser burn) and may even promote thatch. Wet & Dry Conditions

Winter Lawn Feed

ADDED NUTRIENTS - The added iron helps to ‘green up’ your lawn. The magnesium makes photosynthesis more efficient, turning more sunlight to energy & making the grass more green and lush. The seaweed adds essential minerals & breaks down the soil which helps to release more nutrient content. There are two types of lawn fertilisers to choose from. Organic fertilisers are more costly but have many advantages over the alternatives.

The fertiliser will help establish new grass faster so apply the feed on the same day or within a week of seeding. If over seeding do not feed before seeding otherwise your existing lawn will outgrow the new grass. Feeding AND Moss Treatments After you fertilised your lawn you it is advisable not to mow the lawn for 5 or 6 days to ensure that the fertiliser has settled into the lawn. You will normally apply your summer fertiliser between 10 to 14 weeks after the spring treatment. If the weather is dry then withhold fertiliser. It is not going to start working without moisture and though Lawnsmith® Fertilisers have little scorch potential, the salt content can add to already stressful conditions. If conditions suddenly change half way through the summer you can then feed the grass with a granular or liquid fertiliser . Autumn Lawn Feed Unlike grass ‘weed and feed’ products, Lawnsmith® Granular Fertilisers do not contain pesticides or weed killers. Though the bag of bulk material should be stored safely away from children and pets, the lawn may be used by children, wildlife, dogs and cats immediately after application. Both require warmth and water but the first is down to how well you've planted your seed and the second is down to nutrition. Getting strong roots is half the battle which requires phosphate and nitrogen and getting healthy leaves requires potassium and nitrogen. Therefore adding the right fertiliser is very beneficial. For over seeding September or October are the target months for applying your autumn fertiliser. Once again national temperature and weather patterns apply, but as a rule wait until the rains start in late August or September, and then apply your lawn fertiliser. Dependent on where you live you’ll find some years this may mean early September and other years late October. For liquid, autumn and winter feeding we stay with the more traditional nutrient mix so that your lawn will end the year with the correct nutrients it requires on an annual basis. Testing for clay or sandy soil? For existing lawns when over seeding use one of our seasonal fertilisers - the 'sandy soil' variety in spring and summer will give you a better nutrient balance even if you have clay soil. You can use 'starter' or a 'seasonal fertiliser' for patching small areas. For new lawns

A few pets have some peculiar idiosyncrasies, therefore, if you feel your pet may consume or is sensitive to these products then keep them off or don’t use the product. Whether you live in locally in Scotland, or at the other end of the UK, we deliver throughout the country, meaning that you can enjoy our products wherever you live. We also offer a range of Guides to help you choose the right seed and fertiliser for your garden, and regularly post advice on keeping your garden healthy and lush. If conditions are right, which means the grass is growing and there is moisture in the soil then it is best to apply Lawnsmith® Fertilisers straight after mowing. You can also apply before or after rain. Feeding AND Weeding If you have weeds and/or moss in your lawn then use a weed, feed and moss killer to save time and money on buying and applying weed killer for lawns and lawn fertiliser separately. If our Soluble Fertiliser or Green-up Ferrous Sulphate is used then the lawn is safe once dry. This would take just a few hours in the warmer months. Ferrous sulphate may stain feet within the first 24 hours of application.

Lawns / Turfed Areas

Fertiliser that is sprayed as a liquid is traditionally used to top up the nutrients in the lawn. A bit like you having an apple or a Kit-Kat between main meal, though some people do use liquid fertilisers as a regular monthly feed with good results. The best time to start feeding your lawn is generally mid-spring (often late March to April) before the heat of the summer when the soil temperature reaches around 12C. You can tell when the soil has warmed up because the lilacs begin to blossom and the grass starts growing.Remember to apply the fertiliser when the soil is moist or when rain is expected.Fertilisers are less effective in dry soil and may cause scorching of plant roots.Avoid applying spring/summer lawn fertilisers after September as they contain too much nitrogen for autumn use, encouraging green leafy top growth at the wrong time of year. Your lawn may then become susceptible to damage from the winter cold, pests and disease.
