The free ammonia value is useful in determining the amount of free chlorine needed to increase the monochloramine residual at a booster station. The free ammonia level can be reduced by adding free chlorine at a ratio of 5:1 as Cl 2:N to guide the process and help minimize nitrification potential. Total Ammonia When the concentration of ammonia is high enough, it can alter the smell and taste of water. In industrial applications, high concentrations of ammonia can cause corrosion in pipes.
