In Super Mario Bros., Princess Peach was supposed to be a playable character and a "more powerful princess". This was changed for Princess Peach to be the damsel-in-distress rescued by Mario. One of the conversations with Peach involved was to make her have her own story and to be a more powerful princess which the developers tried to push further into the movie.
