About this deal

Cotton thread is notorious for shedding! Be sure to give your sewing machine a good clean once your project is complete. Draw a vertical line through the center of these two horizontal markings. You now have all the markings you need to cut your fabric open. Cutting the fabric open Insert your needle into your fabric about 1” (2.5 cm) away from the short, square end of your buttonhole. Come up through the buttonhole, keeping a tail that’s approximately 2” (5 cm) long. This specialty thread is purpose-made for denim projects. It’s a special construction with a polyester core for strength, wrapped in a cotton sheath that has been dyed in tonal shades of blue so that it blends in with denim fabric. When should I use it?

If your button is loose but still hanging on, you should use your cutting tool to take away the thread that’s still keeping the button on the shirt. A seam ripper will work best for this but you can also use a different type of cutting tool, just make sure that you’re not damaging the fabric of the shirt itself. Next, just use your cutting tool or your fingers to remove any excess old thread that still happens to be hanging on to either the button or the garment. Needle threader Thread Your Needle & Knot The End Of The Thread This is caused by uneven tension. As you’re pulling the threads to form the little knots at the edge of the fabric, try to keep an even tension between the stitches. Pull them just tightly enough that the little knot rests flatly against the edge of the fabric. It’ll get better with practice, so try making a few more practice buttonholes. I would highly recommend getting used to using a thimble when you’re hand sewing, especially on long repetitive hand sewing tasks like sewing buttonholes on a few layers of fabric. I have oddly shaped ring fingers and I have yet to find the perfect thimble for them, so this is a do as I say not as I do situation.

It’s a specialty polyester embroidery and embellishment thread. It stores up light and glows in the dark. When should I use it? Button tufting follows the same basic process as stitch tufting, but the thread is covered on one or both sides with buttons — usually covered buttons in fabric that matches or coordinates with the base fabric.

In the middle of the 18th century, Matthew Boulton, the English manufacturer and partner of James Watt, introduced the bright, costly, cut-steel button, which was made by attaching polished steel facets to a steel blank. In France the facets of the cut-steel button were elaborated by openwork designs. During the first quarter of the 19th century, a less costly stamped steel button was made in an openwork pattern. Brass buttons that were gilded by dipping in an amalgam of mercury and gold also became popular. You will run the threads you’re using through beeswax and press them with a hot iron before using them to make the buttonhole stitches. The wax coating helps condition and strengthen the thread, and prevents tangles from forming. Another option is to leave the seam of your pillow cover open during the tufting step so you can reach through and kind of “massage” the needle through the center of the pillow form, working it along its path. If you have no shortage of thread, do a double thread. Once it's long enough and both sides are equal, cut the thread and tie a basic square knot. A 12-inch thread should be long enough to secure the button tightly.
