This is a well written murder mystery featuring Rizzoli, the tough female detective, and her colleague and friend, Isles. Maura Isles is the Medical Examiner (ME) who "processes" the dead involved in violent crimes. In this story, a brutal murder occurs involving two nuns in a Catholic convent. Rizzoli and Isles are called to the crime scene. However, this feeling of disjointedness could just as easily be a result of the plot itself – Cora is so clearly disturbed and in her ramblings, she is revealing some truth and a lot of lies. Police Commissioner Grovian [and the reader] have to try and separate the fact from the fiction; so, it may well have been this that caused the disjointedness as you’re not privy to the entire truth until the end of the novel. Cora is constantly changing her story, so things are not making a lot of sense throughout the read, although you are able to grasp the consistent theme in her ramblings that link to the truth. After that ill-fated night, Cora’s family isn’t able to recover Magdalena’s body, so they cover that up by illegally obtaining another girl’s body and burying that.

The series, described as a "close-ended series" [50] by the network, was adapted from the novel of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr; however, the book's darker outlook was toned down and the location shifted from Germany to Upstate New York in the United States. [51] It is the first time that Biel has served as an executive producer on a series, a role she said was "gold". [52] Biel stated that she moved into production so that she could develop projects with challenging and interesting roles rather than wait for them to happen. [53]He also turns to frequent masturbation, which is normal, but at this point he is sharing a bedroom with Cora since his wife claims she needs to focus on their younger daughter’s needs. Cora also witnesses her father’s activity multiple times and thinks of it as him trying to pull the sin out of his body. Although no actual incest occurs between father and daughter in the novel, an aunt suspects it’s happening.

Cora goes to the lakeside to enjoy the sun and water with her husband and young son. There she inexplicitly stabs a man to death. There are witnesses and Cora’s own confession but the police commissioner does his own investigation into Cora’s past, uncovering secrets even Cora has trouble remembering. I do have to note that I only skimmed like one small part of this book. Even though I was so confused and maybe a little bored (although I'm not sure that is the term I am looking for), I couldn't bring myself to skim much and I actually found myself wanting to read every word. I skimmed a little bit of Cora's thoughts about her nutty mom's Jesus ramblings, but that was about it and it was very near the end of the book (it was all things you have heard before). Mason and J. D. are arrested and questioned. Mason tells Dan that J. D. is a drug dealer. J. D. tells Harry he has never met Cora, even though Harry says Cora remembers meeting him in a bar on July 3, 2012. J. D.'s lawyer, Mr. Herting, whom Dan recognizes as an affluent hedge fund lawyer, ends the interview. Dan and Harry wonder why J. D. has such a high-powered lawyer. Harry questions Cora and realizes she does not remember anything between July 3, 2012, and waking up in an alley in Poughkeepsie two months later. Harry convinces Dr. Chang, one of Cora's competency evaluators, to try memory recovery with Cora. Harry looks for J. D.'s ex-girlfriend, Madeline Beecham, and Mason tries to get J. D. arrested for drug-dealing. Cora begins to remember pieces of the missing two months, including a room with strange wallpaper and a man in a balaclava. Harry reunites with his estranged wife, Faye. They go on a hike to survey the woods he believes Cora was remembering and he discovers an abandoned school bus Cora mentioned in therapy, along with what appears to be a grave.

This is the third suspense novel in her Rizzoli and Isles series, and I confess, it’s a practically a sin that I haven’t gotten around to reading this book until now. It’s been three years since I read The Apprentice, and as many avid thriller mystery readers know, there are so many amazing books out there just waiting to be read that it’s hard to get to even a small percentage of them. Now that I’ve returned to Gerritsen’s series, I won’t be waiting another three years to read the next one.
