I’m attaching a link to a video of The Cure’s song Charlotte Sometimes. The first part of the video reminds me of the creepy front cover of the book. Ortenzi, Rob (7 August 2008). "Charlotte Sometimes". Alternative Press. Archived from the original on 13 January 2010 . Retrieved 25 June 2012. By the way, you might be wondering, "was the only reason you read this book because it served as the inspiration of The Cure's song 'Charlotte Sometimes' "? Totally! It just goes to show, sometimes it pays heartily to trust your whims. In 1981, a single entitled " Charlotte Sometimes" was released by English band The Cure. Its lyrics concern Charlotte, the novel's central character. They refer to the opening paragraphs: "By bedtime all the faces, the voices had blurred for Charlotte to one face, one voice.... The light seemed too bright for them, glaring on white walls.", [29] and to several events near the end of the book: people dancing in the streets at Armistice; and a school walk when Charlotte cries upon hearing of Clare's fate. The title of the single's B-side, "Splintered in Her Head", was also taken from a line in the novel. [30] The Cure later released another song based on the novel, "The Empty World", on their 1984 album The Top. In 2002 the film-maker Eric Byler released a film entitled Charlotte Sometimes. [31] Its storyline is unrelated to Penelope Farmer's novel, although its title comes from the song by The Cure, based on the novel. Wonderful story of one’s identity and exactly what that means, of boarding school, of details about WWI and the late 1950s too. This is a skillfully told story, compelling from beginning to end, and very touching throughout. It starts off with Charlotte arriving at a new boarding school. It's World War II and she's been relocated for safety. There isn't much with her getting settled aside from some first day jitters. She wakes up the next morning only to discover (spoilers follow!!)... This is apparently one of three books about Charlotte and her sister Emma in the "Avery Hall" series the other two being The Summer Birdsand Emma in Winter. I have not read the other books and do not feel my appreciation suffered in consequence. I think it could be read as a stand-alone. Part III, chapter 7, paragraph 13, last sentence: She began crying bitterly, could not stop . . . . One day, Charlotte learns what has become of Emily and Clare through a conversation with Sarah. Sarah's mother is Emily, and Clare died in the flu epidemic after the war. Later, Charlotte and Elizabeth discuss the events Charlotte has experienced. They find the exercise book in one of the legs of the bed, where it has been for forty years. It includes the last letter Charlotte wrote to Clare.

It’s very suspenseful. It’s a fun meld of speculative fiction and historical fiction. Some aspects are ingenious. It was fun to try to figure out who one particular character was.

The time travel becomes a regular occurrence, taking place every night, and Charlotte and Clare communicate with each other in a diary which they hide in one of the hollow posts in the magical bed that they share. Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I have to admit to being a HUGE fan of the Cure. Yup. That's 80's quasi-gothy band, lead by Robert Smith. What can I say, I've always liked boys in makeup.
