About this deal

In The New York Times, Dani Shapiro called the book "spectacular... at once a breathtaking adventure tale and a profound meditation on the nature of grief and survival, ... both a literary and human triumph." [14] Shapiro wrote that unlike many parallel-arc stories, Strayed's two parallel narratives—the challenging hike itself and the difficult life events that preceded it—are delivered in perfect balance. [14] According to Shapiro, the memoir did not overdramatize its events, but followed a "powerful, yet understated, imperative to understand (their) meaning," allowing readers "to feel how her actions and her internal struggles intertwine, and appreciate the lessons she finds embedded in the natural world." [14] I loved the main character Julia. She is the kind of soul that carries the world on her shoulders. Sensitive, kind yet a bit timid and an introvert. Where as her sister, the supporting character is extremely beautiful and she knows it. A little self centered and man crazy, yet loves her little town where she grew up in and feels a strong bond to her community. Readers will be encouraged to draw on their creativity, to express themselves without fear of being judged, and to make their book really WILD! They will need scissors, pens, paints, tape, glue and a magnifying glass, plus lots of wild materials and their wildest creativity, as this book becomes filled with keepsakes from their own outdoor adventures .

Make This Book Wild: Danks, Fiona, Schofield, Jo

Fiona Danks is an environmental educator and author who works with her writing partner Jo Schofield to create beautiful books about the natural world. Fiona and Jo believe that reconnecting everyone with nature is vital if we are to understand our reliance on a healthy and biodiverse natural world, and ensure it is protected for the future. They believe that all children and families should regularly spend time outdoors in green spaces where nature can weave its magic upon them. Eh. The text box that appears when you hover over the second star in the rating bar describes it perfectly: "it was ok." Jo Schofield gained a degree in psychology from Exeter University and began her career working for an educational psychologist in London. After getting involved in the production of a film, she went on to work in the creative department of a TV advertising agency where she began taking still photographs. This led on to her becoming a commercial photographer in Australia and then London. She worked mainly for national editorial magazines such as Country Living. When her children were small she worked in Watlington Primary School and the Dragon school in Oxford, applying her creative knowledge to the classroom with children aged 6-9 years. More recently she has been focusing on writing and photographing for a series of books with co-author Fiona Danks. The story took many interesting and unexpected twists and turns. It was an all-around captivating read and one of my favorite Kristen Hannah books I’ve read in a while. It had a bit of everything including romance, mystery, tragedy, and drama. From the New York Times number one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone, Kristin Hannah, comes Wild, a remarkable story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope and the promise of new beginnings. While I understand that the intent of this book is to celebrate nature and invite children to engage with nature in a meaningful and imaginative way, I do wonder if a book like this really is the right means to that end. I genuinely feel that this book will appeal to adults much more than children, and perhaps should even be marketed as an "adult coloring book"! The inspiration and ideas for their books came from sharing combined adventures with their own families and a mutual belief in the importance of giving children and young people the freedom to enjoy outdoor adventures. In the rugged Pacific Northwest of the United States lies the Olympic National Forest – a vast expanse of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this mysterious woodland, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Magic Hour tells the story of the two sisters Julia and Ellie who have never been particularly close. Julia is a psychiatrist living in LA. After having been involved in a tragic scandal relating to one of her patients, she feels worn down and torn with what to do next. Ellie lives in the Rain Valley, the small Washington town they grew up in, and works as a police officer. She’s been divorced twice and can’t seem to find what’s missing in her life. I also wish the child welfare issues were researched more carefully and were less sensational - if the voices behind this book want the press to stop seeking a scapegoat whenever something terrible or unpleasant happens - it seems the author would try to do the same and honestly examine every side of this fictional story. December 4, 2012: Wild was voted No. 1 book of 2012 in the "Memoir and Autobiography" category in the " Goodreads Choice Awards 2012." [6] Out of nowhere, a small unspeaking child walks out of the Olympic Forrest. Looking rugged and uncared for, the town works to uncover the young girl’s past and find her parents. Julia is brought in as a doctor to help the child heal and develop. Overtime, Julia forms a strong connection with the girl they name Alice. Can the characters each heal their own past wounds, fight for what’s right, and put the child first? What will become of young Alice?

[1] Distinctions and recognition [ edit ] January 2013: Wild was selected as Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4, where a five-episode abridgement of the book was read. [7] I really hate to make this sound so harsh because I do value the ideas here! It's a beautiful book. I just wonder if a 15 year old might enjoy this kind of doodling, etc. more than a 7 year old. a b c Shapiro, Dani (March 30, 2012). "The High Road / 'Wild,' a Hiking Memoir by Cheryl Strayed". The New York Times. Archived from the original on January 13, 2014.I loved the deep love between the sisters and the wild child, Alice. At the age of 22, Strayed had been devastated by the lung cancer death of her mother, who was only 45. Her stepfather disengaged from Strayed's family, and her brother and sister remained distant. Strayed and her husband divorced, and eventually a lover convinced her to start using heroin. [1] This novel was gripping from the start. There was a bit of mystery to it. At times it was quite sad but also beautiful and eye-opening. It was fascinating to learn about the child raised in the wild and how she learned to adapt to her new surroundings. They will need scissors, pens, paints, tape, glue and a magnifying glass, plus lots of wild materials and their wildest creativity, as this book becomes filled with keepsakes from their own outdoor adventures.
