About this deal

This series is growing on me, although I have some sympathy with the police suspecting Nell since she either finds the body or is closely connected with every case so far LOL. Also, Nell seems to be in mortal danger at least once (I think three times in this book) in every book which becomes a bit repetitious. This is Book 3 in a series of cosy mysteries featuring Dr. Nell Ward, an ecologist who has recently found herself partaking in a spot of amateur sleuthing. Thorndike, R (1935). "Organization of behavior in the albino rat". Genet. Psychol. Monogr. 17: 1–70.

A rat’s front teeth grow 4.5 to 5.5 in (11 to 14 cm) each year, according to Discover Magazine. Their sharp front teeth never stop growing. Additional resources In January 2015, an international "Rat Team" set sail from the Falkland Islands for the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands on board a ship carrying three helicopters and 100 tons of rat poison with the objective of "reclaiming the island for its seabirds". Rats have wiped out more than 90% of the seabirds on South Georgia, and the sponsors hope that once the rats are gone, it will regain its former status as home to the greatest concentration of seabirds in the world. The South Georgia Heritage Trust, which organized the mission describes it as "five times larger than any other rodent eradication attempted worldwide". [55] That would be true if it were not for the rat control program in Alberta (see below). Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica with Wikisource reference Rats are often used in scientific experiments; animal rights activists allege the treatment of rats in this context is cruel. The term "lab rat" is used, typically in a self-effacing manner, to describe a person whose job function requires them to spend a majority of their work time engaged in bench-level research (such as postgraduate students in the sciences).Depictions of rats in fiction are historically inaccurate and negative. The most common falsehood is the squeaking almost always heard in otherwise realistic portrayals (i.e. non anthropomorphic). While the recordings may be of actual squeaking rats, the noise is uncommon – they may do so only if distressed, hurt, or annoyed. Normal vocalizations are very high-pitched, well outside the range of human hearing. Rats are also often cast in vicious and aggressive roles when in fact, their shyness helps keep them undiscovered for so long in an infested home. Nell does tend to spread herself too thin and then bemoans the fact that she is so busy and so tired. She’s too busy to spend planned time with Rav’s parents then wonders why they don’t like her. And after DI Clark’s behaviour in the previous book, seriously, who cares about his fate, romantic or otherwise. While she may have decided to swap badgers for bears when she left her South Downs village in the Pacific Northwest, her books still retain aspects of the downland she spent much of her childhood in. Nell's not privy to the investigation as much, but she's a smart cookie and can see what's what. And when some tests are needed to confirm the guy drowned where it appears he did, she's willing and able to assist. Her conclusions lead her to think in a very different direction to where the police had been headed.

In Indian tradition, rats are seen as the vehicle of Ganesha, and a rat's statue is always found in a temple of Ganesh. In the northwestern Indian city of Deshnoke, the rats at the Karni Mata Temple are held to be destined for reincarnation as Sadhus ( Hindu holy men). The attending priests feed milk and grain to the rats, of which the pilgrims also partake. We see a Nell run off her feet, and trying to find small moments to enjoy the event as well as make a good impression. I like how ecological clues are important for solving the case, which also includes possible fraud, including murder. Author Yarwood-Lovett switches between Nell and James again in this book, giving us a good picture of everything going on, and what the stakes are for Nell. I really thought I would enjoy this much more than I did, having a passion for motor racing and enjoying learning more ecological facts. I don't feel that I learned anywhere near as much about newts as I did about bats. Even the motor racing aspect left me strangely unmoved. And there's an awful lot of dialogue. Lots and lots of dialogue. Far too much. They will actively seek out any potential home that is safe, warm, and close to a regular supply of food! ABOUT 'A MISCHIEF OF RATS': When a driver dies during a glamourous classic car event at her family's estate, Dr Nell Ward is in a race against time to uncover the truth and prevent the killer from making a speedy getaway...

A Mischief of Rats by Sarah Yarwood-Lovett is the third book in the Nell Ward series that is a cross between cozy mystery and police procedural. The story is told from more than one point-of-view, including Nell's as well as DI James Clark. Dr. Ward is an ecologist whose work plays a large role in the mysteries she investigates. In this book, she is doing a survey of newts in a local woodland area when she discovers a submerged car and a dead body. Later her scientific skills come into play when she helps the authorities determine if the man, a well-known race car driver, drowned in the pond he was found in or someplace else. Things become complicated for Nell since James, the lead detective on the case, is her ex-boyfriend. There is also a possible tie to her family since the victim was going to be competing in a race on Nell's family estate.
